Identification of microorganisms to genus or species level can be carried out using techniques including the following:
- Sub-culturing to extract pure colonies
- Gram Stain
- Simple Biochemical tests including Catalase, Oxidase and Coagulase
- Identification to species using biochemical test kits such as API
